The Indirect Free Kick...

mardi 17 mars 2015

When I was a lad, I would guess that something like a third of the free kicks awarded outside the penalty box were indirect. There would even be the regular sight of indirect free kicks inside the box for obstruction........still a law today, but I can't remember the last time I saw it applied. Nowadays, anything and everything inside the box is about whether or not it's a penalty, and everything outside the box seems to be a direct free kick.........even when it has clearly been awarded for obstruction.

It seems as though the common indirect free kick seemed to die a slow death somewhere around the mid 80s. Anyone seen an indirect free kick awarded lately (especially outside of the box). I even remember a good few "goals" from free kicks being chalked off because the free kick was indirect, but the guy taking it didn't understand the refs signal. The last time I saw an indirect free kick for obstruction inside the box was getting on for 30 years ago. Everything now seems to be a penalty even when the laws say differently. Have any of you older fans noticed this ?
