Palace U18s 3-0 Brighton U18s

samedi 19 avril 2014

Apologies that due to increasing other commitments, I’m only going to be able to provide less in depth match reports.

Palace U18s hosted our “friends” from Brighton at the Beckenham training ground this morning in their final league game of the season.

Most of the team have moved up to the U18s from the U16s this season and they found the jump hard at first. Pre Xmas they won only 3 out of 15 league games. The football is more organised (less individualistic) and more physical. But big improvement after Xmas due to new coach and getting used to the standard. Going into the game, Palace had won 6 out of 10 since Xmas including some wins against teams that had suffered heavy defeats to pre Xmas.

The away fixture earlier in the season ended 2-2.

As Woosie reported earlier this week, Kinda-John, Javen Palmer and Doug Wright are being released. King, Black and Gabsi have pro deals. The others in the team are only 16 (1st year U18s) so they will not be given contracts / released until end of next season (though Egbo and Jacob B-A are almost certain to be given pro deals as soon as they hit their 17th birthdays.

A lot more support present than usual to a lot of the HF turning up. Their boisterous initial support was too much for one Brighton parent and she totally over reacted and called the police. They responded and when saw that the HF were there sent 6 officers at one stage. Common sense prevailed and was no need for any police.

Palace played very well. Winning three nil. Jacob B-A put Palace ahead after only 2 mins with a typical goal from him. Picked up the ball midway in oppo half in inside left channel, drifted effortlessly passed 2 men and drilled home from edge of area.

Midway thru the half, Corrie Andrews robbed a dithering defender and raced clear on goal. Very cleverly he dummied the keeper by pretending to shoot early and as the keeper dived, just clipped it over him for the 2nd goal.

Brighton had a lot of the ball in 2nd half but with the Palace backline being very resolute they failed to create any clear chances and just had a string of corners to show for their efforts.

Late on the very quick Corrie Andrews burst clear, held off one defender, dummied another and then sat the keeper down by rolling studs over the ball and going in opposite direction to one keeper assumed and rounded him and slotted home for a brilliantly finished third that rightly drew huge cheers to which young Corrie responded with a shirt off celebration run.

King was not required to make any great saves. He caught some high crosses well. Egbo was calmness personified and really is going to the new Clyne. Matty George had one of his best games at LB and as he has been injury free for a while, he is going places. Combative, quick and good on the ball.

Black was strong in midfield and Hoare, as ever, sprayed the passes around. Bissaka and Jacob B-A were both too good and too quick for their full backs. Jake Grey was good with ball at his feet but never threatened to make a tackle! Corrie Andrews was MOM. So, so quick. The lad has a 6th gear. And getting stronger all time and as only 16, he is going to be a real handful next season!!
